OCEANS Annual Conference 2024
Held in Prague from 12 to 14 July, the OCEANS Network Annual Conference and Annual General Meeting brought together over 50 representatives from across the world to discuss international student mobility programmes and future initiatives.
The 2024 OCEANS Network Annual Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM), held from 12 to 14 July at the Hermitage Hotel in Prague, Czechia, was a resounding success. Over 50 representatives from various nations gathered to exchange ideas, discuss new challenges, and lay out future activities. The event provided a space for cultural exchange and networking, reinforcing the OCEANS Network’s commitment to fostering international cooperation among students, alumni, and educational institutions.
Opening and key themes
The first day of the conference commenced with a welcome led by OCEANS President, Samir Beharic, who highlighted the importance of intercultural interaction in shaping new ideas and perspectives. His address was followed by a keynote speech from Dr Ivana Herglova from Charles University Prague, who discussed the role of internationalisation programmes, both in Europe and globally, with a focus on student mobility and cooperation.
Throughout the event, several panels were held, providing attendees with opportunities to pose questions and engage in meaningful dialogue. A notable panel, "Challenges and Opportunities of International Student Mobility Programmes," chaired by OCEANS representatives and international speakers, addressed the obstacles that students face when applying for scholarships, including financial and language barriers. The discussion not only focused on these challenges but also explored solutions and opportunities offered by Erasmus+ and other mobility initiatives.
Panel discussions and interactive debates
A series of insightful panels followed, each focusing on the evolving responsibilities of OCEANS members and the success of past projects. Speakers such as Sunhee Kim (Board Member 2015-16) and Uswaa Alhamid (2020-21) reflected on their time as Board Members, while the current and future Board, represented by Donaldson Chima Ofoha (2023-24) and Leila Benabdallah (2024-25), laid out their vision for the coming year. One of the highlights was a virtual talk by Helene Banegas from the European Commission, European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA), who shared the agency’s plans for tackling future challenges in EU-funded programmes.
Engaging with ESAA and future projects
Another key panel was the presentation of organisations within the Erasmus+ Student and Alumni Alliance (ESAA), including the African Students and Alumni Forum (ASAF), Erasmus Mundus Association (EMA), garagErasmus (gE), and the Western Balkans Alumni Association (WBAA). This panel showcased the collaborative efforts of these groups, aiming to enhance mobility opportunities for students across diverse regions.
In addition, OCEANS President Samir Beharic and Vice-President Leila Benabdallah presented the organisation’s annual working plan, detailing upcoming projects and priorities. One of the conference’s most anticipated moments occurred in the evening: an intercultural party where participants shared traditional sweets and attire from their home countries. This celebration was not only a showcase of diversity but also a powerful reminder of the value of cultural understanding.
Second day highlights
The second day of the conference opened with a panel discussion which examined the future direction of OCEANS initiatives. Andres Muñoz Rojo from the Erasmus+ Support Service Team was one of the key participants, answering questions from attendees about upcoming opportunities and developments within the programme.
Another key panel featured several OCEANS projects, including the OCEANS Webinar Series, Culture for Conversion, and the Future of Education in Africa. These discussions highlighted the impact of student-led projects, especially in underrepresented regions. To ensure dynamic participation, breakout groups were held later in the day, allowing attendees to explore various topics, such as enhancing the OCEANS brand and crafting a long-term vision for the organisation.
Closing remarks
As the conference drew to a close, President Samir Beharic expressed gratitude to all attendees for their contributions and participation. He reminded the group of the importance of continued collaboration, especially in overcoming future challenges related to international mobility programmes.
